What Did Researchers Find in Pet Urine?

One of the first studies to measure volatile organic compound (VOC) metabolites directly in dog and cat urine found that benzene metabolites made up roughly 60% of the total VOC metabolites detected in the cats studied — and that some of the dogs studied showed levels comparable to what's typically seen in human tobacco smokers. Benzene is a common byproduct of things like vehicle exhaust, certain household products, and tobacco smoke.

It's Not Just One Study

A more recent cohort study out of Frontiers in Veterinary Science measured urinary metabolites of benzene, xylene, and 1,3-butadiene in a group of golden retrievers and found detectable — and in some cases genotoxic-level — concentrations across the group as a whole, regardless of the other health factors researchers were tracking. In other words: everyday environmental exposure to these compounds appears to be common, not rare, among household dogs.

Simple Swaps That Can Help

None of this means panic is warranted — it means awareness is useful. A few low-effort habits that can help reduce everyday VOC exposure for pets: improving ventilation in rooms where pets spend the most time, choosing unscented or low-VOC cleaning products, skipping scented candles and plug-in air fresheners where pets sleep and eat, and keeping pets out of attached garages or away from idling vehicles when possible.
