What a Binder Does — and Why the Choice Matters
A binder latches onto compounds in the digestive tract so they leave the body rather than being reabsorbed. The questions that separate a good daily binder from a poor one are simple: What does it bind? Can you give it with food? And is there research behind it? On all three, humic and fulvic acid stand out.
The Research on Binding
Humic and fulvic substances have one of the deepest binding-research records of any natural compound — decades of peer-reviewed work across environmental science, agriculture, and animal studies. Here's what that literature shows.
Glyphosate. Humic acid has been shown to bind glyphosate directly. One study demonstrated humic acid's adsorption of glyphosate¹, and research in chickens found that humic acid supplementation reduced glyphosate distribution in the body². The binding interaction has been documented repeatedly across soil and organic-matter studies³.
Aflatoxin (mycotoxins). Humic acid has been specifically evaluated as an aflatoxin binder in broiler chickens, with measurable results⁴ — directly relevant to the mycotoxins that can appear in pet food and grain.
Heavy metals. This is where the research is deepest. Humic and fulvic acids have been shown to bind and reduce the impact of chromium⁵, lead⁶, cadmium⁷, and mercury⁸ across numerous studies — through the reactive, "grab-onto-things" molecular structure that defines these compounds.
Pesticides and other organic pollutants. Humic substances have been documented binding a broad range of organic pollutants⁹, including pesticides like DDT and chlorpyrifos¹⁰.
This is the point most pet supplements can't make: the binding behavior of these ingredients isn't a marketing claim — it's a documented property, studied for decades. It's exactly why we chose them.
Fulvic Acid: The Absorption Advantage
Humic acid does the binding; its smaller cousin fulvic acid does something different and equally valuable — it supports absorption. Fulvic acid has been studied as a carrier that improves the solubility and uptake of other compounds¹¹, and supports nutrient transport and utilization across animal studies¹²'¹³. In other words, it helps the good stuff get where it needs to go, even as humic acid helps usher unwanted compounds out. That dual action is why we use both, together, standardized in our nano blend.
Why Not Just Use Activated Charcoal?
Activated charcoal is the binder most people know — and it's genuinely powerful. But that power is also its problem: it's non-selective. It binds indiscriminately, including the nutrients in your dog's food and any medications they're taking. That's why veterinarians reserve it for acute situations and keep it away from mealtimes and meds.
For a daily supplement, that's disqualifying. You'd have to separate it from food and medication every single day, and risk stripping the nutrition out of your dog's meals.
